Gaining Trust

This week in our business we had to help set a better direction with a new strategic partner that had gone off our preferred course.  A difficult conversation was had and hopefully changes will be made and our relationship will be stronger because of it.  This experience taught me how important it is to choose the right people to have or put trust in.  In Guy Kawasaki's Aspects of Building Trust, https://ecorner.stanford.edu/in-brief/aspects-of-building-trust/ - he uses the example of someone who is trying to get a large part of the pie feeling that if they don't grab the bigger part then they will somehow lose.  In contrast, he says that a baker's mentality is to make bigger and more pies so that more people win.  There is a trust issue between us and this partner.  We have put trust in him but have hedged that wisely by setting limits and controls.  He views this partnership as a fight for the size of the pie.  He has not reciprocated trust but it's possible that it is due to our reserved position.  Whatever the case is this video has caused me to reflect on this relationship and how we can possibly improve it.
