Gaining Trust

This week in our business we had to help set a better direction with a new strategic partner that had gone off our preferred course.  A difficult conversation was had and hopefully changes will be made and our relationship will be stronger because of it.  This experience taught me how important it is to choose the right people to have or put trust in.  In Guy Kawasaki's Aspects of Building Trust, https://ecorner.stanford.edu/in-brief/aspects-of-building-trust/ - he uses the example of someone who is trying to get a large part of the pie feeling that if they don't grab the bigger part then they will somehow lose.  In contrast, he says that a baker's mentality is to make bigger and more pies so that more people win.  There is a trust issue between us and this partner.  We have put trust in him but have hedged that wisely by setting limits and controls.  He views this partnership as a fight for the size of the pie.  He has not reciprocated trust...

Looking Forward

This week I've worked hard on committing to a more rigid regime that will help me succeed.  I'm trying to do one thing really well at at time and hopefully it will be added to my muscle memory so I do it without thinking.  This week's goal was to give myself 1 hour of uninterrupted research time at work each day.  Trying to find new deals has been difficult lately with the state of the market and it has made my desire wane in looking.  Seems like I'm easily distracted by other, potentially more immediate gratifying tasks.  I can't say that after one week I've succeeded but, I've at least stayed true to this exercise. I also want to comment for my own purposes to rewatch this youtube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nczw6xHJ0I Elder Holland tells a too close to home story of not giving up.  I should watch this clip at least once a month to remind myself that some current trials will only be distant future memories. I've already completed mult...

Lessons Learned

I have not previously been keeping this journal because I did not understand the significance of it.  This week changed things for me somewhat.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading George Leonard's, "Mastery" book.  It is a quick read but one that I marked up on my kindle.  It has caused me to think more about enjoying the journey of life and not just the destination.  This week I have had the opportunity to spend time with my good friend Keith.  He is facing a terminal illness and won't be with us much longer.  As I've had time to reflect on his life and my interaction with him, I've been overwhelmed with emotions of love I have for this good man and his family.  Naturally, I've put myself in his situation and wondered how I would face it.  I feel like I would have regrets of not enjoying life more.  Leonard's book helped tie this together for me.
